Message from Gian Luca Fiori

Vivaldi’s engines are getting close to the end of their service lives. The main engine has over 7,000 hours, and the generator has more than 5,000 hours. Both are Westerbeke engines, and I’m starting to explore replacement options.
One possibility I’m considering is moving to an electric propulsion system, where the diesel engine would be replaced by a generator that charges a battery bank, providing power for both propulsion and the boat’s electrical needs.
I’m curious whether this is a practical solution for a boat like Vivaldi, particularly for longer-distance cruising. I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who has made this conversion, what system you installed, how it has performed, and whether you’ve been happy with the decision.
Any real-world experiences, advice, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated!
edited by Gianluca on 01/11/2026
